Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Program
ONDCP information about preventing and reducing prescription drug abuse – www.WhiteHouseDrugPolicy.gov/
Abuse of prescription drugs to get high has become increasingly prevalent among teens and young adults. Past year abuse of prescription pain killers now ranks second—behind marijuana and ahead of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and other drugs—as the Nation's most prevalent illegal drug problem. Prescription drug abuse poses a unique challenge because of the need to balance prevention, education, and enforcement, with the need for legitimate access to controlled substance prescription drugs.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse's (NIDA) research report
Prescription Drugs: Abuse and Addiction, there are three classes of prescription drugs that are most commonly abused, opioids, central nervous system depressants and stimulants.

Commonly used street-terms for various use of prescription drugs include:

  • Depressants; methaqualone, Street Term: Ludes
  • OxyContin, Street Term: Hillbilly heroin
  • Ritalin (methylphenidate), Street Term: Vitamin R
