Involvement in crime and delinquency for teen females has increased significantly in the last two decades. The murder arrests rate alone for young girls is up 64 percent. This may be due as a result of changes in the way girls are charged when caught committing violent acts. Unfortunately, there is little knowledge about the causes as to why teen girls engage in violence; and, few studies have been conducted on female crime and delinquency.
Lack of diverse socialization is one consideration in producing aggressive negative behavior. Teen girls find extreme difficulty when interacting with diverse groups - if there has been no real and continuous exposure to these groups - in the area of race, culture, social class, ethnicity and economics. A second consideration is to develop skills to survive in their harsh communities and temporarily escape a dismal future. A final consideration is that teen girls are more likely to have experienced a troubled or violent family history.
Troubles existing in the home life may be characterized by poverty, divorce, parental death, strong and/or abusive parental control, abandonment, alcoholism, drugs, and/or sexual abuse. These conditions leave teen girls with feelings of anger, distrust, betrayal, depression, hatred, hopelessness and/or revenge. Incarceration for serious offenses identified additional factors which propelled teen girls toward violence: leaving home or being kicked out; considerable free time without adult supervision; and an "inadvertent drift" into violence and crime as their lives began to fall apart. Although some rise above the disappointments of family life to embrace healthy family living, in all considerations there is a cry for help that can no longer be ignored.
